On the 16th of April 1746: The battle of Culloden took place. It would prove to be the last pitched battle on British soil. The Jacobite forces of Charles Edward Stuart were defeated by loyalist troops commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland in a battle that more closely resembled a massacre. Following the battle, Jacobite supporters were executed and imprisoned and homes in the Highlands were burned. The actions resulted in the Duke of Cumberland, who led Hanoverian troops at Culloden
