It sounds like you have a Chase "Total Checking" account? If so, you have three options to avoid monthly fees: Direct deposit (s) totaling $500 or more into the account. A balance at the beginning of each day of $1,500 or more in the account.

Simple answer is if you have no money. You’ll get a 12 dollar fee. You’ll go negative. If you don’t do anything with the account still you’ll get another fee. You’ll go more negative. On the third month of you didn’t do anything the account is closed and charged off. FYI- The total checking account has three ways to waive the fee.
